Picture this, it’s a cold winter morning and there’s a blanket of snow and ice on your Tesla. You make sure to follow steps to defrost your car from the mobile app, however, when you start driving there’s still some ice jammed onto the windshield wipers. It eventually melts as you continue the journey, but it’s annoying to deal with nonetheless. This is a common occurrence for many Tesla owners who live in areas with cold weather during the year. However, there are ways to mitigate this. Continue for details on the best way to defrost the windshield wipers on a Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

Defrosting the Windshield Wipers

If you expect snow or ice to build up when the vehicle is parked, there’s a simple fix that can help defrost the wipers completely before your next drive. After you park the car, tap Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode on the screen.

This will raise the wipers against the windshield. As a result, when you defrost the vehicle ahead of time, the wipers will de-ice much better as they will warm up with the windshield. Also, if your Tesla happens to be equipped with the wiper defrosters, then this process becomes even easier. Follow Tesla’s visual of the climate controls, and if you see number 7, that means you have the wiper defroster feature. Simply tap it and give it some time to de-ice your vehicle.

TIP: Roughly 10 to 15 minutes before your departure, open the Tesla app and tap Climate > Defrost Car. Give it some time, and when you get to your vehicle, you’ll see that the snow, ice, and frost on the windshield, windows and mirrors are all melted.

If you attempt to physically remove ice off the windshield wipers yourself, it can result in damage. If bad enough, you may be required to completely replace the wipers altogether. Lucky for you, we’ve created a guide on how to replace the windshield wipers on a Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
