It can be easy for your neck to get stiff if you’re sitting in a car and don’t have a soft headrest. Thankfully, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have three comfortable headrests in the back of the vehicle. While two of them are stiff, the rear center head support is adjustable and can actually be removed if needed. Continue reading for steps on how to remove the rear center seat head support in a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y.
Head Supports
In your Tesla, the front seats and second-row outboard seats include integrated head supports that cannot be adjusted. However, the rear center head support can be raised, lowered or removed. The support should always be raised and locked into a position so that the center is aligned with the occupant’s head for added comfort and safety. Of course, this only applies to those who are not in a car seat.
TIP: Always do a quick check of the rear center head support when first getting in your car. To minimize the risk of severe injury or death in the event of a collision, make sure that it’s positioned correctly before driving. Quickly check if it’s lifted and locked in position before sitting.
How to Raise and Lower the Rear Center Head Supports
Before we go into removing the rear center head support, it’s important to know how to raise and lower it. Here are the steps on how to make these adjustments:
- Raising the Support: You’ll notice that this specific head support is lower when you first sit in the car when compared to the seats closest to the door. That can be changed by simply putting your hand at the base of the support and pushing it up. It’ll then lock into place and be ready for anyone who is sitting in the middle.
- Lowering the Support: When the head support is raised, you’ll see a button at the base of the outer post. You can press this button and then push it down back to its original location.
Removing the Rear Center Head Support
While uncommon for day-to-day driving, there might be situations where you’ll need to remove the rear center head support in your Tesla Model 3 or Y. The most likely scenario is that improved rearward visibility is required.
Start by raising it using the steps above, then by pressing and holding the button at the base of the outer post. Lastly, insert a short, flat object such as a flat-head screwdriver, into the opening on the inside base of the left post, and pull the head support upward. It should come off easily.
To re-install it, simply line up the posts with the opening and put the head support back in. Press down until it clicks into place, then quickly pull on it to ensure that it’s locked and secured.
The Bottom Line
The steps on how to remove the rear center seat head support in a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y are simple. First, put your hand at the base of the support and push it up so that it’s in the most upright position. Then, hold the button at its base and insert a short, flat object into the opening on the inside base of the left post. Lastly, pull the head support upward and it should come off with ease.
