A common feature present in most luxury vehicles is wireless phone chargers. While they typically charge more slowly than when plugging in your phone, it still provides a convenient and wire-free experience. Lucky for you, all Tesla cars come equipped with wireless charging pads. So, how fast are the wireless phone chargers in your Tesla? Continue reading for more.
Location of the Chargers
Currently, wireless charging pads for mobile phones are present in all available Tesla vehicles. This includes the Tesla Model 3, Y, S, X, and Cybertruck. In each car, the charging pads sit at the front console below the touchscreen.
NOTE: Depending on which model you have, the wireless charging pad may also be located at the rear armrest.
CAUTION: Before charging, any objects present on the charging pad must be removed. This includes coins, keys, metal objects, as well as any NFC cards like credit cards, vehicle key card, and hotel room cards. Damage to NFC cards is possible if a phone is charged and the card is not removed.
Charging Speed
The wireless charging pads can provide up to 15W of power to Qi-enabled phones. To charge your device, place your phone directly on one of the two pads. You may notice your device heating up, but this is a perfectly normal response to inductive charging.
Your phone will only charge when the vehicle is powered on, which is when the touchscreen is on and you’re in the car. Your phone won’t charge when you leave the vehicle unless you enable features like Dog Mode, Camp Mode, Sentry Mode, or Keep Climate.
NOTE: Wireless charging may not work if your phone case is too thick, or if it’s made of metal. In these scenarios, simply remove the case before placing it on the charging pad.
The Bottom Line
So, how fast are the wireless phone chargers in your Tesla? In short, they can provide up to 15W of power to Qi-enabled phones. The charging pads will only charge a device when the vehicle is powered on. In some cases, charging won’t work if a phone case is too thick or if it’s made of metal.
