One major benefit of the Tesla ownership experience that people often rave about is how little maintenance is how little maintenance the vehicle requires. However, there is still routine maintenance that should be completed regularly. One that is often not discussed is the low-voltage battery in the car. So, how often should you replace the low-voltage battery in your Tesla? Continue reading for more.
What is the Low-Voltage Battery?
All Tesla vehicles use a low-voltage battery, typically a 12V lead-acid battery or a 15.5V lithium-ion battery, to power various vehicle systems when the high-voltage battery is off or not providing power. Examples include when the car is off, or during certain charging scenarios.
NOTE: This battery is crucial for features like the touchscreen, lights, and door locks. It also plays a role in starting the car and providing power to the power conversion system.
How Often Should It Be Replaced?
The 12V lead-acid batteries typically last two to four years, while the 15.5V lithium-ion batteries are found in newer Tesla models and have been said to have a longer lifespan. However, this one will also eventually need replacement.
When the low-voltage battery needs replacement, your Tesla will show a message on-screen when in your car. The same message will also show in the Tesla app. You can then schedule a mobile service appointment and Tesla will send out a technician to replace the battery. It typically costs between $100 to $200 for the service, which includes the parts and labor.
NOTE: Tesla has also released a guide on how to replace the low-voltage battery on your own.
The Bottom Line
How often should you replace the low-voltage battery in your Tesla? Typically, the 12V lead-acid batteries found in most Tesla vehicles will need to be replaced every two to four years. If the car is equipped with the 15.5V lithium-ion battery, it may last longer. In either scenario, the vehicle will display a message on-screen and in the Tesla app indicating when the replacement is required. You can then schedule a service appointment and get it changed, or order the battery and do it yourself.
