If you’re the owner of a Tesla Model 3 or S, then you’re lucky enough to have access to Track Mode, a feature designed to modify the stability and traction control of the vehicle while performing in a closed circuit. While there are several customizations that can be made, a neat addition is the ability to track lap time from within the car. Continue reading for steps on how to use the Lap Timer in Track Mode for the Tesla Model 3 and Model S.
Enabling Track Mode
Track Mode is always disabled by default anytime you start the Model 3 or S. To enable it for your current drive, ensure your vehicle is in Park then tap Controls > Dynamics > Track Mode using the touchscreen. Sometimes this also may appear as Controls > Pedals & Steering > Track Mode.
Once enabled, the word TRACK will be visible on the touchscreen or instrument panel, and a Track Mode pop-up window will appear on the map. Additionally, the car will display a colour-coded image of your Tesla that provides critical information regarding the Battery, motors, tires, brakes, and more.
NOTE: See our guide on what Track Mode is if you’re looking for more details on the feature itself.
Using the Lap Timer
Once Track Mode is enabled, the Tesla map on the touchscreen will display a Lap Timer. You can follow the onscreen instructions to place a pin on the start and finish points directly on the map. Lastly, hit START to initiate the driving session, and when you’re done touch STOP.
The timer will begin automatically, and when you complete the lap by going through the finish point, it will reset. It will also display the real-time difference between the current lap and the fastest lap in the session thus far. The entire track will be highlighted in blue on the Tesla map.
NOTE: When each lap is completed, the Lap Timer will show the duration of the lap on-screen. Additionally, it will also display the times of the previous laps, as well as your best lap of the driving session.
The Bottom Line
The steps on how to use the Lap Timer in Track Mode for the Tesla Model 3 and Model S are simple. Once in Track Mode, set the start and finish locations by following the on-screen instructions. Next, simply hit START and initiate the driving session. Once you’re done, tap STOP and that will disengage the timer.
