If you’ve ever arrived at a Tesla Supercharger only to find that all the stalls are full, or worse, temporarily offline, you know how annoying that can be. Lucky for you, there’s an easy way to check the station’s status before you arrive. Whether you’re planning a long road trip or just topping up during a busy day, understanding how to tell the real-time condition of a Supercharger can save you time, stress, and unnecessary detours. Continue reading for steps on how to tell the status of a Tesla Supercharger.
Charging Locations
Before you can check the status of any charger, you must first know how to display them on your Tesla Maps in your car. To display charging locations, tap the map’s search bar and then touch Charging.
Charging locations are then shown in a list with the closest ones at the top. Moreover, each charging location is represented by a corresponding pin. You can tap each pin to display more information.
Supercharger Status
The appearance of a charging location’s pin reveals the predicted status of the location:
- Red Pin with a Number: This indicates that the Supercharger location is operational, and the number displayed on the pin represents the predicted number of available Supercharger stalls upon arrival. See the visual from Tesla for reference.
- Grey Pin with a Clock: Means that the Supercharger location is predicting a high volume of users, and you may need to wait before charging. See the image from Tesla.
- Grey Pin with a Wrench: The Supercharger location may be operating at a reduced capacity. See the example from Tesla.
- Grey Pin with a Prohibition Sign: Means that the Supercharger location may be closed. See the visual from Tesla.
- Red Pin with a Lightning Bolt: Indicates that the Supercharger location has no data available, but should be operational. See the image from Tesla.
- Black Pin with a White Dot: Represents a third-party charger. You can tap to reveal more information. See the example from Tesla.
The Bottom Line
The steps on how to tell the status of a Tesla Supercharger are simple. When in your car, tap the map’s search bar and touch Charging. Charging locations will be shown in a list, represented by a corresponding pin. Each pin comes with a different meaning, which can be seen above.
