The Tesla Model 3 and S both offer Track Mode, a feature designed to modify the stability and traction control of the vehicle while performing in a closed circuit. This is a unique feature for both cars, which can go incredibly fast and provide exceptional power. Continue reading for steps on how to customize Track Mode for the Tesla Model 3 and Model S.
Enabling Track Mode
Track Mode is always disabled by default anytime you start the Model 3 or S. To enable it for your current drive, ensure your vehicle is in Park then tap Controls > Dynamics > Track Mode using the touchscreen. Sometimes this also may appear as Controls > Pedals & Steering > Track Mode.
Once enabled, the word TRACK will be visible on the touchscreen or instrument panel, and a Track Mode pop-up window will appear on the map. Additionally, the car will display a colour-coded image of your Tesla that provides critical information regarding the Battery, motors, tires, brakes, and more.
NOTE: See our guide on what Track Mode is if you’re looking for more detail on the feature itself.
Customizing Track Mode
While in Track Mode, to make changes, tap Track Mode Settings on the screen, or touch Controls > Dynamics > Customize next to the Track Mode setting. Here are some of the major customizations:
- Handling Balance: Drag the slider to toggle the balance of your Model 3 or Model S in a turn. This setting redistributes torque between the front and rear axles.
- Stability Assist: Stability Assist modifies motor torque by selectively applying the brakes to each wheel, making the car more stable to help maintain control. You can choose between Reduced, Minimal, and Off.
- Regenerative Braking: Drag the slider to choose how much regenerative braking is available to you as you drive in Track Mode. While you can choose any value, Tesla recommends 100% to reduce the risk of the brakes overheating.
- Post-Driving Cooling: When enabled, the cooling systems continue working even after you leave the vehicle, and stops automatically when the components are sufficiently cool.
NOTE: While this covers some of the major customizations that can be made, there are several other ones as well. See the complete list from Tesla for further details.
The Bottom Line
The steps on how to customize Track Mode for the Tesla Model 3 and Model S are easy. When in Track Mode, tap Track Mode Settings on the screen, which should be present on the map. Alternatively, touch Controls > Dynamics > Customize next to the Track Mode setting.
